Feminine Routines 2022
Through screen-printing, I find myself reflecting on my feminine life experiences and the personal imagery from my home. With unintentional still lives and interior spaces as subject matter, I explore mundane aspects of a daily schedule and display a softer embrace of feminine expectations. Makeup bags, clothes, beauty products, and other vanities show how women are associated with maintaining a complex regimen to start or end their days. Even with the business of daily life, women are expected to find time to complete these practices. While these routines can be fast-moving, they also represent times of relaxation and confidence. For example, I feel this relaxation and confidence the most when I put on makeup for fun or when I have a thirty-minute spa day in the shower. Shown together, these four prints represent the passage of time throughout a woman’s day. The color schemes move clockwise through the prints, and the subject matter shows the steps that a woman takes to get ready.
I utilize screen printing to create compositions that feature a bright color palette with organic contour lines. My stencils are hand made using expressive brushstrokes and organic line work through traditional media such as paint and ink. These rushed layers parallel the fleetingness of the routine the final print depicts such as trying on an outfit or picking out a pair of earrings. I emphasize pattern, continuous line, and color theory as well to make my work balanced and dynamic. Overall, these design elements intentionally convey the impact these routines have on my daily life.
